Glitter Topper

POSTED ON: Sunday, September 29, 2013 @ 4:22 PM | 0 comments

Here's my previous mani with a glitter topper. Not liking this effect very much, will probably be gone by tomorrow night...
The glitter used here is 503 Gems from Milani. Ordered it online some time ago.
P.s. I'm blogging from my phone for the first time, just downloaded the blogger app today! Would probably be good for short posts! (:

Weekend Roundup 28.09.13

POSTED ON: Saturday, September 28, 2013 @ 4:38 PM | 0 comments

Apologies for missing out on the Weekend Roundup last week. School has been too hectic with project deadlines and readings and tests, the only free time I had for myself was spent catching up on sleep.
The week ahead will be yet another mad rad rush with 3 midterm exams all squished into 2 days, and not to mention project deadlines looming nearer each day. I wish I had 36 hours a day.

Alright. Enough of the school related ramblings and on to some nail stuffs!

1. Gradient Nails

More gradient nails this week. People say practice makes perfect. I've been practicing gradient nails a little more for the past few manis now but I still haven't managed to come up with anything that is even close to perfect yet. But some improvement there and I am quite glad.

The two colours used here are OPI's My Vampire Is Buff (used very very frequently these days) and Sun Of A Peach from China Glaze (happy bright orange!). Gradient achieved with a make up sponge and my trusty Seche Vite topcoat to blend the two colors even more.

Wanted to add something more to these gradient nails, like a glitter topper or drawing some pattern over it but I just couldn't think of anything I'd really like to try so I'm leaving it as it is for the time being.

 2. Polish Us Pink

It's the month of October in a few days time which means that Breast Cancer Awareness month is here again! Here's the new logo for this year's Polish Us Pink where we will don pink nails in October for Breast Cancer Awareness. Not sure who's hosting this event but here's a post from @subtleshimmer's Instagram.

So do join in this meaningful event and tag your pink nail posts with #PolishUsPink and #BCAmani2013. Looks like some ladies have already started on their pink manis before October has arrived so do check out everyone's manis by clicking on the hashtags!

3. I Live To Eat

No matter how hectic life is, we still have to eat right? (:

Shared with you guys in my last post that I won a dozen cupcakes from Twelve Cupcakes in the #midautumnrevolution Instagram contest, and I collected them from the store at Bishan Junction 8 this week. So here's a photo of my yummylicious cupcakes! Thank you so much Twelve Cupcakes! (:
[If you actually count the number of cupcakes in my photo, you'd realise that there are only 10! That's because I already gave 2 to my Daddy before I took the photo hehehe...]

And since 12 cupcakes to finish on my own was a little too many, I brought a few to school to share with my dear friend Wanlin, Grace and my Strategy module group mates. Yummy cupcakes make people happy, and making people happy makes ME happy too!

The second picture was my first time at Blooie's Roadhouse Bar and Grill for dinner with my Daddy. Cajun chicken burger and pork ribs. They're famous for their beer chicken but we didn't get to try that since that dish had to be ordered one day in advance and we only decided on Blooie's for dinner on the day itself. Definitely going back next time for their beer chicken!

Amidst all the work and a never-ending to-do list, remember to eat well and rest well everyone!
Have a good weekend! (:

Weekend Roundup (15.09.13)

POSTED ON: Sunday, September 15, 2013 @ 11:24 PM | 0 comments

1. #PolishTogether

Today's #PolishTogether theme for the Birthstone Series is SAPPHIRE (blue). Credits to @perpetualfunk for hosting this Birthstone Series and for giving us a heads up for the next few themes to come. So here's a simple swatch of one of my favourite blue polishes today. A rather translucent blue  I got from Beadstreet some time ago. That's three coats without topcoat.

And here's a preview of the next few themes for the Birthstone Series...
15th September: SAPPHIRE (blue)
13th October: OPAL (your choice)
10th November: TOPAZ (orange)
15th December: TURQUOISE (turquoise/teal)

Do check out #PolishTogether on Instagram to view all the other pretty Sapphire themed manis!

2. Twelve Cupcakes #MidAutummRevolution

Just today I was delighted at the news that I've won a box of a dozen cupcakes from Twelve Cupcakes. Entered their Mid-Autumn Festival Instagram contest where we had to place our cupcake on the "moon" in the little cut out and tag our cupcake photos with #midautumnrevolution.

There's my winning photo above, yummylicious PB Chocolate cupcake set in their Mid-Autumn themed pink cutout and placed on the "moon" leaflet. The background is an oriental mooncake box from Peach Garden.

The contest ends on 19th September so there's still time for you guys to enter it and win yourselves a box a cupcakes too! I think there're 10 winners every week! You can click on the photo above for a lager version to view their leaflet and the details, or click here to view their original photo on Twelve Cupcakes' Facebook page.

Good luck everyone! I can't wait to collect my cupcakes! ^^

3. School Blues

As Week 4 of school comes to an end and Week 5 begins tomorrow, readings are beginning to pile up and project deadlines are looming closer.

Amidst all these never-ending tasks and busy schedules, I still need time to hang out with my dear friends and enjoy good food. Need to keep myself sane yeah? Tuesday evening was spent with Wanlin after buying my new toy, Spot the Dog, from Traveller's Planet. We had a good dinner at Medz (pictured below), a tea set with 4 savouries, 3 sweets, a bowl of fries, a mocktail and a cup of coffee/tea for only $10.90. Great variety there and great value for money.

Apologies for the lack of nail posts, have only been able to manage a single post per week for now.
All the best with school/work everyone!

Lorraine

Weekend Roundup (08.09.2013)

POSTED ON: Sunday, September 8, 2013 @ 1:00 AM | 0 comments

Hello everyone, the weekends are here again hurray! Despite the wet, rainy, gloomy weekends, it's time for us to relax and take our minds off stressful schoolwork/ work. And time for a weekend roundup...

1. Nail Foils

This week is the third week of school. Since there's a Watsons right in the heart of my school, and a lovely Essence counter available inside, I love taking a mini tour in my school's Watsons. This week, they were having a mini sale with random stuff going at very low prices. Random stuff include kiddy stationery like notebooks and coloured pencils, canvas bagpacks and even plastic shoeboxes.

Me being a nail polish addict was immediately attracted to CHEAP NAIL FOILS!
Going for $2.50 each, I bought myself 2 sets of nail foils! I would have gotten more of them if the other designs were pretty, too bad there were very few choices on sale and the rest of them were just mehhh...

Had to use my new nail foils this weekend! Quite satisfied with them, this set of nail foils didn't curl up as much as the one I bought from the market previously. Although they did shrink a bit when my topcoat dried but I'm perfectly fine with that. Not much of a difference. I love the zigzag colours to bits!

The instructions on the packaging says to remove them with a normal nail polish remover. I usually just violently peel them off anyway.

2. DOME Cafe

As school gets stressful and the workload piles higher, I needed some time to myself to relax and destress. So here's my afternoon tea on a rainy day at DOME Cafe @ Singapore Art Museum.
Really yummy Mango Cashew Muffin and a lovely cup of Chocolate Affogato. And the artistic design of the building to accompany me that afternoon.

3. Durians!

Regarded as the King of Fruits by us Singaporeans, Southeast Asians like the Singaporeans and Malaysians love durians. Every June to August is the durian season and the price of this fruit is relatively higher than other fruits. A D24 durian costs approximately $10 each, and the higher grade MaoShanWang durian costs approximately $14 per kg.

Don't be fooled by it's scary thorn-covered husk, it's flesh is yellow and really creamy and tasty. Unfortunately, most of my European friends absolutely dislike the pungent smell of this fruit and refuse to acknowledge it's wonderful taste. Heheh.

Daddy took me to this stall on Friday afternoon, where the stall owner gets his durians fresh from Malaysia everyday. His stall only opens at around 2pm in the afternoon when the large truck from Malaysia arrives and delivers baskets of fresh durians. Yes, freshly plucked from the Malaysian durian trees that morning.

4. Mid-Autumn Festival

Other than being the season of durians, September is also where us Chinese celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival by eating mooncakes. We buy these mooncakes as gifts for our friends, family and clients too.
Purple Sage is selling our very own mooncakes as well so do email me at lorraine@purplesage.com.sg or theuncertified@gmail.com if you would like to purchase a box.
Usual price is $52 but I can give you a good 20% if you're interested (:

Do check out my other post with a more detailed writeup of Purple Sage mooncakes!

Gradient Nails

POSTED ON: Friday, September 6, 2013 @ 8:22 PM | 0 comments

As mentioned in last weekend's roundup, I haven't done gradient nails in ages and would need more practice with it again.

So here's a shot at purple and pink gradient nails.
The colours I used were OPI's Tomorrow Never Dies and China Glaze's Astro-Hot. Since Astro-Hot was a holographic pink polish, it wasn't as easy to do gradients with as normal creme polishes since it doesn't turn out smooth but I loved the colour combination anyway.

Reversed the colours on the right hand. I think I like the left hand better, with the purple inside and the pink on my tips.

Looks like I need a lot more practice with gradients...

Lorraine

Blue Taped Mani

POSTED ON: Monday, September 2, 2013 @ 4:28 PM | 0 comments

Today's mani was done with simple tools that you can find around the house. And really fun to do too!

Colours used:
- CG's Electric Beat
- Matt light blue from Etude House (which doesnt have a name for the polish...)

Actually, other than the usual basecoat, nail polish and topcoat, I only used 3 other tools to complete this mani. A craft scissors (those with patterned edges that gives you a wavy or jagged pattern when you cut stuff with it), scotch tape and a sandwich bag.

I didn't think of taking photos as I went along doing the mani so all I can give you is a step by step guide on how to achieve something like this...

Step 1: Paint a basecoat, then paint on two coats of light blue polish.
Step 2: Stick a length of scotch tape onto your sandwich bag and paint your scotch tape a darker blue.
Step 3: Wait for the polish on the scotch tape to dry, peel the scotch tape off the sandwich bag and cut out wavy strips using the craft scissors. (this took me a while to get all the widths somewhat equal but it was fun anyway!)
Step 4: Stick the dark blue wavy scotch tapes onto your nail and finish with a topcoat.

Taa-daa! That's it. Simple as that.
I've seen other tutorials online with girls using different patterns of craft scissors and the results are beautiful. There are even some who use craft punches to punch out shapes of stars or hearts and sticking them onto their nails. Those are gorgeous and really easy to do as well! Maybe I should try that soon since I have a few punches lying around in my drawers...

No school on Mondays = No Monday blues.
Happy week ahead everyone! (:

Love,
Lorraine
